How do home health and hospice differ, and who pays?
Home health brings skilled nursing and therapy visits to a homebound patient under a doctor's plan, usually paid by Medicare; hospice brings a comfort-care team to someone with a life expectancy of six months or less, paid by Medicare's hospice benefit.
South Carolina licenses home health agencies and hospice programs by the counties they may serve, shown in the table; an agency with an office in one county may be licensed for many. Neither provides round-the-clock hourly caregivers; that is the work of licensed in-home care providers.
