What is assisted living in South Carolina?

Assisted living in South Carolina is a community residential care facility (CRCF), licensed by the Department of Public Health under Regulation 60-84, that provides room, board and help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, medications and meals for adults who do not need daily skilled nursing.

DPH's data lists 68 licensed CRCFs in the four counties with 3,996 licensed beds; 7 of them are small community residences run by county disabilities boards or the Department of Mental Health, leaving 61 senior-serving CRCFs, 33 of them in Greenville County. CRCFs range from small residential homes to large purpose-built communities with apartments, dining rooms, activity programs and Alzheimer's special care units.

Who is a good fit for assisted living?

Assisted living fits adults who need help with some daily activities or medications, who would be unsafe or isolated living alone, and whose medical needs fall within Regulation 60-84's limits, which exclude people needing daily skilled nursing, IV medications, sliding-scale insulin or care for serious pressure ulcers.

Short-term nursing for up to 14 consecutive days and hospice can be brought in, so many residents stay through illness and the end of life.

How much does assisted living cost in South Carolina?

CareScout's 2025 South Carolina median is $64,200 a year, about $5,350 a month, for a private one-bedroom; no Greenville-specific figure is published.

Optional State Supplementation helps residents with net income under $1,804 a month in 2026 in participating CRCFs, and the Community Choices waiver can pay for Residential Personal Care for eligible Medicaid members in participating CRCFs. VA Aid and Attendance and long-term care insurance help many others.

How do I choose an assisted living facility in the Greenville area?

Narrow by location first, choosing buildings close to the family member who will visit most, then check each candidate's DPH license, Alzheimer's unit flag and enforcement record in our directory, and tour at least three at different times of day.

On each tour ask for the admission agreement, the most recent DPH inspection report and plan of correction, the staffing schedule for peak and overnight hours, and how the facility handles a resident whose needs grow. Ask whether it participates in Optional State Supplementation or Community Choices Residential Personal Care, in case savings run low.

What does a South Carolina CRCF have to do when a resident moves in?

Before admission, the resident and facility sign a written agreement listing services, fees and the refund policy; within 72 hours the facility completes a written assessment; and within seven days it builds an individual care plan with the resident and family, reviewed at least every six months (Regulation 60-84, Sections 702, 703 and 901).

The resident must also have had a physical examination within 30 days before admission and must establish care with a South Carolina-licensed physician within 30 days after. Ask to take part in the care plan meeting; it is the document that says who will help with what, and how often.
