Anderson is its own hub
Families sometimes assume senior care in the Upstate means Greenville. For most of Anderson County it does not. AnMed Medical Center, the county's main hospital, AnMed's rehabilitation hospital, a licensed hospice house and a broad mix of assisted living and nursing homes are in or near the city of Anderson. Honea Path, Iva, Piedmont and Williamston add a few more.
Anderson County residents are served by the same Appalachian Council of Governments Area Agency on Aging as Greenville and Pickens, and Prisma Health SeniorCare PACE-Upstate covers the county.

Small residences and large communities
Anderson has more small CRCFs than the other counties: several 10-bed residences and a group of four 11-bed units on one campus licensed separately. Small homes can offer a quieter, more personal setting and are more likely to accept Optional State Supplementation. Larger buildings usually offer more activities and are more likely to have an Alzheimer's special care unit.
The same regulation governs both: at least one staff member per eight residents at peak hours and one per 30 off-peak, with someone awake at all times. In a 10-bed home that can mean a single staff member overnight, so ask how emergencies are handled.
The state veterans nursing home
The Richard M. Campbell Veterans Nursing Home in Anderson holds a DPH nursing home license for 220 beds and is CMS-certified, with ratings on its directory page. It is one of South Carolina's state veterans homes, with its own eligibility rules separate from VA pension. Anderson County's veterans affairs office can help with the application and explain the current wait.
VA pension with Aid and Attendance can also help eligible veterans and surviving spouses pay for assisted living or home care; under rates effective December 1, 2025, a single veteran's maximum is $29,093 a year.
Paying for care in Anderson County
Prices in Anderson tend to sit around or below South Carolina's 2025 assisted living median of about $5,350 a month, with smaller residential homes often lower and newer large buildings higher. Ask every facility for a written quote that separates base rent from care fees. For residents with very low income, ask which buildings participate in Optional State Supplementation, which in 2026 pays a participating CRCF up to $1,719 a month on a resident's behalf as payment in full.
For help at home, the Community Choices waiver, PACE-Upstate and the Appalachian COG's programs all serve Anderson County. Veterans should talk with the county veterans affairs office about VA pension with Aid and Attendance before assuming they will not qualify.
How the nursing homes compare
CMS rates Anderson County's certified nursing homes across the full range of its scale, and each home's page shows its overall stars, latest inspection, deficiency count, staffing hours and turnover beside the four-county median. NHC HealthCare Anderson, with 290 licensed beds, is the largest nursing home in our four counties. Several others carry names ending in Post Acute, reflecting short-term rehab units alongside long-term care.
Use the numbers to build a short list, then visit. Stars measure inspections, staffing and quality measures, not how a particular hallway feels at night.
