Does Medicare pay for assisted living?
No. Medicare does not pay rent, meals or personal care in a South Carolina CRCF; it pays only for covered medical services delivered there, such as doctor visits, home health and hospice.
Assisted living is paid privately, by long-term care insurance, VA pension, or for low-income residents OSS or Community Choices.
How long does Medicare pay for nursing home rehab?
Up to 100 days per benefit period after a qualifying inpatient hospital stay of at least three days, with days 1 to 20 at no cost and a daily coinsurance from day 21, as long as daily skilled care is needed.
Observation days do not count toward the three inpatient days.
Does Medicare pay for hourly home care?
No. Medicare pays for intermittent skilled home health visits for homebound patients under a doctor's plan, but not for ongoing hourly personal care or companionship from an in-home care provider.
The Community Choices waiver can pay for personal care at home for eligible Medicaid members.
How much is VA Aid and Attendance in 2026?
Under VA pension rates effective December 1, 2025, the maximum annual rate with Aid and Attendance is $29,093 ($2,424 a month) for a veteran with no dependents, $34,488 with one dependent, and $18,697 for a surviving spouse.
VA pays the difference between that rate and countable income after care costs are subtracted.
Is there a state veterans nursing home near Greenville?
Yes. The Richard M. Campbell Veterans Nursing Home in Anderson is a South Carolina state veterans nursing home with a DPH license for 220 beds and CMS certification.
Admission has its own eligibility rules; county veterans affairs offices can help with the application.
Where can Greenville seniors get free Medicare counseling?
From I-CARE, South Carolina's State Health Insurance Assistance Program, through the Appalachian Council of Governments Area Agency on Aging at 864-242-9733 for Greenville, Anderson and Pickens counties, and Upper Savannah COG for Laurens County.
Counselors help compare plans and apply for help with costs; they sell nothing.
Does Medicare Advantage change nursing home rehab coverage?
It can: Medicare Advantage plans must cover skilled nursing care at least as well as Original Medicare overall, but many waive the three-day hospital rule while requiring prior authorization, use their own network of nursing homes, and set their own daily copayments.
Before discharge, call the plan or ask the hospital case manager which Upstate nursing homes are in network and whether authorization has been approved. I-CARE counselors at the Area Agency on Aging can explain a plan's rules during open enrollment.
Who helps Upstate veterans file for Aid and Attendance?
County veterans affairs offices in Greenville, Anderson, Pickens and Laurens counties help veterans and surviving spouses file pension and Aid and Attendance claims at no charge, through accredited service officers.
Bring the veteran's discharge papers (DD-214), income and asset records, and a statement of care costs from the facility or home care agency. Nobody should charge simply to prepare VA forms, and offers to reposition assets for a fee deserve caution.
